A Companion card allows a person’s carer free entry into participating venues and events. The Companion Card is free for people with significant and permanent disability who have a lifelong need for a high level of attendant care (carer).   

The card is accepted by a range of organisations, from local councils to popular recreation activities or events including, but not limited to:   

AFL (Australian Football League)  

Ticketmaster  

Village cinemas  

Arts Centre  

Melbourne Zoo 

The card can also be used on Victorian public transport on all trains, trams, metropolitan bus services, country trains, coaches and town bus services.  

Who is a companion?  

A companion can be a family member, friend or a paid support worker who provides your high level attendant care support. They must be of an age to be able to assist you to participate at a venue or activity. 

You can choose who you wish to have as your companion, and this may vary depending on the activity and the occasion. 

Am I eligible for a Companion card? 

The following eligibility checklist can be used to establish if you are eligible for a Companion Card – 

  • You live in Victoria and are a permanent resident/citizen of Australia 
  • You can demonstrate you have a significant, permanent disability that meets the eligibility scheme 
  • You can demonstrate that due to the impact of your disability you are unable to participate at all community activities without a carer providing high level support to you 
  • You can show that you will need high level support from a carer when attending venues and events for the rest of your life

How do I apply for a Companion card? 

You can apply online or via post for your Companion Card by following these steps – 

  1. Check if you are eligible 
  1. Take some photos 
  1. See a health professional to complete the form, sign/verify the photos and give you reports 
  1. Submit your application 

Applications will take a minimum of 6 weeks to process and assess.
